The European Union's commissioner for emergency relief is to visit Romania on Friday, just as a new surge of flood water is expected to hit the country, officials in Brussels said, DPA reported.

At least 23 people have died in some two weeks of flooding in the country, an EU member since 2007. With water still pouring down major rivers, experts say that the situation remains dangerous.

EU Aid Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva will visit Romania on Friday, her spokesman, Ferran Tarradellas, told journalists in Brussels.

"That is an important date because there is an important wave (of flood water) that is expected around that date, which could provoke further floods," he said.

EU member states have already begun offering flood aid to Romania as part of the bloc's civilian solidarity mechanism.

Hungary on Tuesday offered 10 pumps, two generators and eight lighting systems, while Poland offered pumping and relief equipment and 23 rescue experts, Tarradellas said.

Bulgaria has offered 20 aid workers, 40 pumps, four boats and 10,000 sandbags, he said.

Austria, Belgium, Estonia and France have already offered equipment.
