At least 14 killed in bus crash in Albania

At least 14 people were Sunday confirmed to have died when a bus plunged down a ravine in northern Albania the previous day, dpa reported.

The bus was travelling along a mountain road between Durres on the Adriatic coast and Fushe Arrez, 70 kilometres north of the capital Tirana, when it left the road. It fell some 300 metres into a river at the base of the ravine.

With at least four of the injured, including three children, in a critical condition, the death toll was expected to rise, authorities said.

It was not clear how many passengers were aboard the bus at the time of the accident. Helicopters were used to transport the injured.

President Bamir Topi and Prime Minister Sali Berisha have visited the injured in the hospital and promised to assist the families of the victims.

The cause of the accident was still under investigation, but according to a police spokesman the bus was driving in adverse weather.
