Lohan starting jail term on probation violation

Troubled actress Lindsay Lohan is set to begin her 90-day jail sentence on Tuesday after spending the previous five days in a luxury rehab facility owned by her defence lawyer, dpa reported.

Lohan, 24, was slapped with a jail sentence earlier this month after a judge found that she had repeatedly violated the terms of her probation for drunk-driving offences, which had required her to remain drug and alcohol free and attend weekly rehab sessions.

Lohan is expected to serve her sentence at the Century Regional Detention Facility in Lynwood, California.

The actress will be housed in the 2,200-bed facility's special needs unit, where she will live in isolation for her own safety and will be forced to swap her designer clothes for a prison-issued orange jumpsuit.

Because of California prisons' overcrowding problems, non-violent female misdemeanor offenders typically only serve 25 per cent of their sentences.

Lohan previously spent 84 minutes in prison in 2007 for earlier drunk-driving offences.
