Lindsay Lohan's repeated parole violations finally caught up with her Tuesday when the troubled young actress was handcuffed and sent to jail to serve a 90-day sentence, dpa reported.

Lohan, 24, wore a plain black suit as she walked a gauntlet of fans and paparazzi on her way in to the Los Angeles Superior Court to be remanded into custody.

"Unless there's anything else, I'm going forward with remanding at this time," Judge Marsha Revel said during the five-minute hearing.

At that point Lohan was cuffed behind her back and escorted out a side door by four sheriff's deputies. Then she was placed in the back seat of an unmarked silver police car and taken to the Century Regional Detention Facility where she will serve her sentence.

The actress will be housed in the 2,200-bed facility's special needs unit, where she will live in isolation for her own safety and will be forced to swap her designer clothes for a prison-issued orange jumpsuit.

Because of California prisons' overcrowding problems non-violent female misdemeanor offenders typically only serve 25 per cent of their sentences.

In addition to the jail sentence and another three months in an inpatient rehab facility, Lohan will have to stay sober for the next year.

Lohan previously spent 84 minutes in jail in 2006 for a string of drug and drunk-driving incidents and was released on strict probation. But she repeatedly flouted the terms of her release by missing alcohol education classes and skipping a court date to stay at the Cannes Film Festival, where she claimed she had lost her passport.
