A 15-year-old New Zealand boy was recovering in hospital Monday after miraculously escaping with minor injuries when he fell 16 storeys from his family's apartment through a car park roof onto a concrete floor, dpa reported.

The boy was in a stable condition after falling nearly 50 metres from the top floor of the apartment block in Manukau City, near Auckland, and news reports said he was expected to make a full recovery.

He suffered a broken wrist and rib and some internal injuries but was expected to leave hospital later this week, the New Zealand Herald reported.

Building manager Jason Epps-Eades told the paper the car park roof broke the boy's fall and probably saved his life. "He's going to be okay," he said. "It's just incredible that he survived."

Housekeeper Kaa Wehi said, "God must have been with him. He's got an angel looking after him, that's for sure."

The boy was not named and the paper said his family were too upset to speak publicly about the accident.

An intensive care specialist told the Herald that it was rare for someone to live after falling more than five storeys, and the boy likely survived because he did not fall head first.
