The death toll in bombings that targeted two mosques in north-western Pakistan two days ago has risen to nearly 90, security and health officials said on Sunday, DPA reported.
A suicide bomber detonated his explosives during Friday prayers in the Akharwal area of Darra Adam Khel, which borders Peshawar, the capital of the north-western province of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (KP).
Hours later attackers hurled three hand grenades into a mosque during evening prayers in the suburb of Peshawar, the capital of KP.
Rafiq Khan, a senior official in Darra Adam Khel, told German Press Agency dpa over phone that the total number of people killed in the first mosque bombing had reached 82.
"Altogether 71 people were injured and of these 40 are still hospitalized. Some of them are in critical condition," Khan said, adding that 15 to 20 kg of explosive material was used in the suicide vest.
However, an hour after the report was compiled at Darra Adam Khel, three more wounded succumbed to their injuries at the Lady Reading Hospital in Peshawar.
Mujahid Khan of the private Edhi ambulance service said four people were killed and 24 injured in the second mosque bombing.
Taliban militants claimed responsibility for the both attacks in a message sent to local media outlets.
The attacks mainly targeted locals who had raised tribal militias to support the government in its action against Islamist insurgents.
