A suicide bomber became the only victim of his blast Tuesday after the motorbike he was riding exploded prematurely in eastern Afghanistan, the Interior Ministry said, DPA reported.

The explosion occurred in Behsud, a district in Nangarhar province, before reaching the target of the attack, it said without giving further details.

Security has deteriorated in Nangarhar, which has a long, porous border with Pakistan, from where the Taliban are accused of plotting attacks on Afghan and foreign soldiers in Afghanistan.

Tuesday's blast came after two civilians were injured Monday in another suicide bombing in Nangarhar's Mohamand Dara district.

Taliban insurgents fighting Afghan and NATO-led forces have intensified their activities this year. They have relied heavily on the use of suicide and roadside bombings in their nine-year insurgency.

In another incident, five Taliban insurgents were killed Monday after they clashed with Afghan forces in Bedaar village in Asmar, a district in the south-eastern province of Kunar, the Defence Ministry said.

Also on Monday, two Afghan soldiers were killed and one injured during a military operation in the Zherai district in the southern province of Kandahar, the ministry said.
