Pro-Russian forces have killed eight rebels during a shootout in a high-rise building in the conflict-ridden North Caucasus, the news agency Interfax reported Sunday.
The men had barricaded themselves in a ten-storey building in Makhachkala, the capital of the republic of Dagestan.
Residents of the building were evacuated before the firefight broke out, the national anti-terror committee said.
The rebels were thought to be behind an attack on policemen last week, in which one person was killed.
Islamist militants have been fighting for years to create a separate state in the volatile North Caucasus region, dpa reported.
