A soldier of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) was killed in southern Afghanistan, the alliance said on Monday.

The soldier was killed by a roadside bomb on Monday, ISAF said in a statement, without revealing the victim's nationality or the location of the attack, DPA reported.

Most of the troops stationed in the southern region are from the United States, Britain and Canada.

More than 700 international troops have been killed in Afghanistan this year, the deadliest period for foreign soldiers since a US-led invasion ousted the Taliban regime more than nine years ago.

Nearly 150,000 foreign troops are currently based in the country.
