Five Taliban militants have voluntarily given up insurgency and surrendered to government in Afghanistan's northern Kunduz province, 250 km north of Afghan capital Kabul on Thursday, an official said.

"Five Taliban fighters under Mullah Padshah Khan handed over their weapons including a rocket-propelled grenade to police voluntarily in Dasht-e-Archi district this morning," district governor Shikh Sadudin told Xinhua.

This is the second batch of Taliban to join government in northern Afghan provinces over the past two days.

On Wednesday, a Taliban group composed of 11 armed men defected to government in the neighboring Takhar province.

More than 60 militants have surrendered to government in Kunduz province over the past three weeks, according to local officials.
