Three policemen, including a senior officer, were killed and more than a dozen people injured Monday in a suicide bombing in north-western Pakistan, government officials said, DPA reported.

The attack took place in Peshawar, the capital of militancy-plagued Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province.

Siiraj Ahmad, the district's top civil administrator, told reporters that a suicide bomber on foot detonated his explosives near the vehicle of police Deputy Superintendent Rashid Khan as he was on his way to the office.

"Rashid Khan, his guard and driver have died while 13 to 14 people are injured," Ahmad said.

Dr Rahim Yar Afridi, head of the Lady Reading Hospital, said that five policemen were among the injured.

Taliban militants have carried out dozens of attacks on official and civilian targets in recent years, killing and injuring thousands of people, in what they call retaliation for security operations by government forces against their hideouts in the adjacent tribal region.
