Estonian Foreign Minister Urmas Paet confirmed Thursday that seven Estonian citizens had been kidnapped in Lebanon on Wednesday, DPA reported.
In a statement, the Estonian Foreign Ministry said a special crisis commission had been set up to deal with the incident and that Paet had been in contact with the Lebanese authorities.
"The Lebanese authorities have confirmed that they will help Estonia in any way possible to resolve this situation. The Foreign Ministry has been in contact with the families of all the kidnapped citizens," the ministry said.
Speaking on Estonian television, Paet said that as yet he had no information concerning the reason for the abduction or the kidnappers' demands.
The seven victims are believed to have been on a cycling holiday when they were seized in Lebanon's eastern Bekaa valley.
