A Czech mountaineer survived a fall of nearly 1,000 metres in Slovakia's High Tatras, the country's mountain rescue team HZS said on its website Thursday.

The man lost his footing Wednesday while trying to scale the 2,655-metre Gerlachovsky stit and plunged 50 metres onto a snow-clad slope before sliding a further 900 metres down the mountain, DPA reported.

His companion alerted rescuers who used a helicopter to fly the injured climber to hospital, where he was later reported to be out of danger, HZS said.
