A bag containing 11 million yen (145,000 dollars) in cash was netted by local fishermen from the ocean floor 23 kilometres off a tsunami-devastated city in north-eastern Japan, local media reported Saturday.
The overnight bag, which had been caught in the fishing net of a trawler earlier this month, might have been swept away by the March 11 tsunami that ravaged the north-east coast, Kahoku Shimpo newspaper reported.
There were 1,100 10,000-yen notes in the bag, but authorities found nothing to identify the owner, the paper said, DPA reported.
The cash will be transferred to the person who discovered it if its owner does not come forward by late April, it said.
