Hundreds of demonstrators representing both sides of the gay marriage issue in the United States gathered at the US Supreme Court in Washington on Tuesday, DPA reported.

Supporters flooded the steps and sidewalk across the plaza in front of the entrance, while opponents filed past the building, banging drums and blowing horns and whistles.

The supporters held signs proclaiming, "The nation is ready for marriage equality," shouted, "Gay, straight, black, white, marriage is a civil right" and waved US flags and those bearing the yellow equal symbol and the multicolor stripes of the movement.

Police on motorcycles attempted to keep the march moving.
