The National Congress of Crimea's Armenian Society decided to create a regional national and cultural autonomy in Ukraine's breakaway region of Crimea.

"The regional national and cultural autonomy will be registered Dec. 13 at th justice ministry in line with the laws of Russia," the Crimean Armenian Society's Head Vagharshak Melkonian told RIA Novosti news agency Oct. 27.

He said the new regional association will include 17 local national and cultural autonomies of the Armenians.

Melkonian said the creation of such autonomy, unlike the status of a public organization, will allow the Armenians to make claims for funds from the republican and state budgets for their programs on preserving culture, national language, identity and historical heritage.

Aside from that, Crimea's Armenian community appealed to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Armenia to open a consulate in Ukraine's separatist region of Crimea.

Some 15,000 to 20,000 Armenians live in the Crimea

It is worth noting the Armenians living in Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey and that insist on their own autonomy have several times throughout history made claims about separation and independence.
