Russia's Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu had emergency phone talks with Azerbaijani and Armenian defense ministers on the situation in Azerbaijan's occupied Nagorno-Karabakh region, RIA Novosti reported citing Russian Defense Ministry's press service Apr. 2.

On the night of April 2, all the frontier positions of Azerbaijan were subjected to heavy fire from the Armenian side, which used large-caliber weapons, mortars, grenade launchers and guns.

The Defense Ministry of Russia said the Nagorno-Karabakh region constantly remains in the focus of the ministry's leadership.

"In this regard, general of the army, defense minister of the Russian Federation, Sergei Shoigu held emergency phone talks with his counterparts - Azerbaijani Defense Minister, Colonel-General Zakir Hasanov and Armenian Defense Minister Seyran Ohanyan - regarding the need for urgent measures to stabilize the situation in the conflict zone," said the ministry.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The two countries signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the US are currently holding peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented the UN Security Council's four resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding districts.
