Human Rights Council calls for release of Iranian diplomats

( Irna ) - Asian Human Rights Council (AHRC) in Thailand by issuing a statement condemned kidnapping of 5 Iranian diplomats in Erbil, Iraq by the US forces and called for their release.

The statement, a copy of which was faxed to Iran's embassy in Bangkok, said "We strongly condemn the US forces attack to Iran's consulate in Erbil, Iraq, and kidnapping of five Iranian diplomats and we express our deep sympathy with the diplomats' families." The statement called on the US officials to release Iranian diplomats and also asked for giving permission to the families of the diplomats to meet them.

The council's Secretary General Jaafar Hussein by dispatching an email to Iran's embassy in Bangkok expressed his sympathy with the Iranian diplomats' families and condemned their arrest by the occupying forces and called for their imminent release by the US forces.

Five Iranian diplomats working in Iran's General Consulate in the city of Erbil, north of Iraq, were kidnapped by the US forces on February 9, 2007.
