(dpa) - King Carl XVI Gustaf Wednesday received visiting Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan at the start of the Turkish leader's official visit to Sweden.

Erdogan, who arrived late Tuesday, later visited the nearby parliament building for a meeting with the members of the parliament committee on European Union affairs and the committee on foreign affairs as well as speaker Per Westerberg.

Later Erdogan was to hold bilateral talks with Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt.

The agenda included Turkey's membership talks with the EU, which Sweden has strongly spoken in favour of.

Before the meeting, the Turkish premier was also to deliver a lecture on the theme at the Swedish Institute of International Affairs.
