New Istanbul airport served over 28 million passengers since beginning of 2019

The new airport in Istanbul served 28,875,290 passengers in January-August 2019, the Turkish Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure told Trend.

Some 7,172,324 passengers were served on domestic flights, while 21,702,966 passengers were served on international flights.

The ministry noted that 184,106 flights were carried out at the new airport in Istanbul over the indicated period, 46,955 of which were domestic flights, while 137,151 were international flights.

"The volume of cargo transportation at the new airport in Istanbul amounted to 302,656 tons for the reporting period, of which 48,675 were domestic, and 253,981 were carried by international flights," according to the ministry.

The opening ceremony of the new airport, which was attended by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Mehmet Cahit Turhan, took place in Istanbul on October 29, 2018.

The third airport of Istanbul was built in the vicinity of Lake Terkos, located in the northern part of the city.
