By Rufiz Hafizoglu - Trend:

The construction of the Yeni Zigana automobile tunnel in Turkey's north-west, between the provinces of Trabzon and Gumushane, has been completed by over 50 percent, Trend reports referring to the Turkish Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure.

According to the ministry, construction of an 11-kilometer section of the tunnel is currently underway.

The ministry also noted that the construction of the tunnel will be completed ahead of schedule.

The construction of the Yeni Zigana tunnel was expected to be completed in 2021, but an increase in the pace of work suggests that the construction will be completed in June 2020, according to the ministry.

The total length of the tunnel is 29 kilometers, with a width of 12 meters. So, this tunnel will be the longest in Turkey.

According to the ministry, construction work in the tunnel was launched simultaneously in two directions.

The construction of the tunnel in Gumushane province began in April 2016, and in Trabzon in August of the same year.

The ministry noted that six ventilation systems will also be installed in the tunnel.

At present, 39 automobile and three railway tunnels operate in Turkey.
