Baku, Azerbaijan, Dec. 14

By Umid Niayesh- Trend:

Iran will launch its newly unveiled Arash radar system next week, Commander of Iran's Khatam ol-Anbia Air Defense Base Brigadier General Farzad Esmayeeli said, Fars news agency reported on Dec. 14.

The home-made Arash Radar system which was unveiled on Dec. 10 is one of the important achievements of Khatam ol-Anbia Air Defense Base.

The long-rage radar has high capability in detecting and identifying targets in electronic warfare, Esmayeeli said.

The commander refused from revealing any more data or information about the details of the new radar system.

General Esmayeeli announced in early September that Iran is mulling the plans to develop its air defense systems based on the possible threats which might be posed to the country in the next five years.

Later in November, the Iranian navy unveiled an advanced phased array long range radar system, dubbed the Asr, which has been designed and manufactured by the Iranian Navy experts.

Iran's Navy has been recently increasing its presence in international waters to protect naval routes and provide security for merchant vessels and tankers.

The Islamic Republic has repeatedly asserted that its overseas naval presence is designed to convey a message of peace and friendship to the regional countries.

In line with international efforts against piracy, the navy has also been conducting patrols in the pirate infested Gulf of Aden since November 2008 to safeguard merchant containers and oil tankers owned or leased by Iran or other countries.
