By Anakhanum Idayatova - Trend:

Egypt is interested in opening of a plant for the production of the medical equipment and medicaments in Azerbaijan, in particular, hepatitis C medications, Suzanne Jamil, Egyptian ambassador to Azerbaijan, said in an interview with Trend June 14.

"The first stage of negotiations on this issue has been held," she said. "An Egyptian delegation is expected to visit Azerbaijan June 14-16 for further discussion of this issue."

Jamil said that Egypt has already received a permit for the supply of certain medications to Azerbaijan.

Jamil said that Egypt is interested in expanding trade relations with Azerbaijan.

"The trade relations between the two countries developed more rapidly before 2010," she said. "However, after two revolutions in Egypt, the economic cooperation slowed."

"Another meeting of the joint intergovernmental commission will be held in Cairo in November 2016," she said.

"The sides will have new opportunities to discuss the areas of developing the cooperation," the diplomat said, adding that this will give an impetus to the expansion of mutual economic relations.

As for the possible purchase of a share in the Egyptian refineries by the State Oil Company of the Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR), the ambassador added that the Egyptian side has already submitted its proposals and is waiting for the Azerbaijani side's response.
As for the cooperation in the tourism sector, the ambassador stressed some difficulties in this area for Egypt.

"After a number of notorious accidents, namely, the explosion of the Russian aircraft over Sinai and other terrorist acts, the number of tourists has greatly declined in Egypt," she said. "But Egypt is not depressed. Unfortunately, nobody is insured against terrorism today. Terrorist attacks occur in the US, Europe and Turkey."

According to the Azerbaijani State Customs Committee, the Azerbaijan-Egypt trade turnover amounted to $3.7 million as of 2015 compared to $94 million in 2014. This reduction is associated with drop in exports by more than 800 times.
