The construction of 15 new hydropower plants will begin in some regions of the country in the next few days, a spokesman for the President of Georgia Manana Manjgaladze said at a traditional briefing on Tuesday.

"It is a continuation of the policy which the Government of Georgia has been implementing since 2003. It is creating even greater energy independence," Mr Manjgaladze said.

He noted that 13.000 people will be employed during this project in 2012.

"Our goal is to ensure that the country won't return to the past, to the problems that affected all of us and which seriously disturbed us seven to eight years ago and remained unresolved for many years. It was a lack of electricity and gas, cold and darkness," Mr Manjgaladze said.

The opening of new hospitals and clinics will be continued and presentations of new projects will be made in February. Looking ahead there will be a focus on education with a number of ideas being exhibited.

Mr Manjgaladze said the new hospital will be opened in Mtskheta-Mtianeti, Tsageri and Tetritskaro in February.
