The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) conducted a two day seminar for members of Turkmenistan's Interministerial Commission on Treaty Body Reporting on effective compilation of the country report on implementation of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), UNICEF reported.

Members of the Interministertial Commission who will contribute to Turkmenistan's CRC implementation report this year, have gained valuable insights into the work of the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child, thoroughly studied reporting guidelines, and examined the general principals of the CRC.

The seminar presented an opportunity for the Commission members to work on parts of the report concerning the general measures of implementation, such as legislation, coordination, independent monitoring, data collection, training and dissemination of the CRC, and cooperation with civil society.

Submission by Turkmenistan of the first periodic report on implementation of the CRC Optional Protocol on the involvement of children in armed conflict and Protocol on the sale of children, child prostitution and child pornography were also discussed at the seminar.

"The recommendations submitted by the Committee in 2006 encouraged Turkmenistan to address the issues of family environment and alternative care, juvenile justice, prevention of violence against children, basic health and welfare, education, children with disabilities, and special protection measures," the report reads.
