Tbilisi, Georgia, March 28
By Nana Kirtzkhalia - Trend:
Georgia's Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili made an initiative to include the definition of family into the country's constitution.
He made this initiative at a government meeting on March 28.
Garibashvili proposed to include the following record into the constitution: "a family is a union of a man and a woman".
The prime minister added the anti-discrimination law reflects the Georgian people's tolerance towards other religions, ethnic groups and individuals with a different lifestyle.
"As there may be various approaches and in order to avoid speculations over this topic, I propose to include a record in the constitution saying that a family is a union of a man and a woman. Latvia did so and Croatia also did the same last year before joining the EU," the prime minister said. "Despite the fact that the current legislation of Georgia already defines the family as a union of a man and a woman, it is desirable to make such a record in the constitution in order to avoid misinterpretations. This law does not grant special rights to anyone. The law provides everyone with equal rights, guaranteed by the Georgian legislation."
