Iranian president Hassan Rouhani says that the country's oil crude export is less than 50 percent of its production due to international sanctions.

Rouhani who is on a visit to the north western province of Ardebil, made the remarks in a meeting with veterans and elites of the province, Iran's State IRINN TV reported Aug. 21.

Rouhani underlined that although some parts of the sanctions have been lifted, Iran still remains under sanctions.

"Iranian people are still under the pressure of the sanctions," he said.

Lifting sanctions is among the administration's priorities, the president said, adding "We are trying to remove the cruel sanctions within the framework of the law and by safeguarding the rights of the nation."

Rouhani stressed that his policies on the issue is being supported by the Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Iran and the P5+1 (the five permanent UN Security Council members plus Germany) sealed an interim deal in Geneva, on November 23, 2013, for a six-month period.

Under the deal, the six countries undertook to provide Iran with some sanctions relief in exchange for Iran agreeing to limit certain aspects of its nuclear activities. The deal, which took effect on January 20, expired on July 20.

The two sides agreed to extend their nuclear negotiations for another four months until Nov. 24 after failing to meet the July 20 deadline to reach a deal on curbing the Iranian nuclear program in exchange for ending sanctions.

The U.S. and its Western allies suspect Iran of developing a nuclear weapon - something that Iran denies. The Islamic Republic has on numerous occasions stated that it does not seek to develop nuclear weapons, using nuclear energy for medical research instead.
