Currently, there are four contenders for the post of Prime Minister of Georgia, in the event of victory in the parliamentary elections which will be held on October 1.

After changes made to the constitution, the prime minister will become the first executive as from 2013.

The most likely candidates for the post of head of government in the event of the victory of their party in the parliamentary elections are the current prime minister Vano Merabishvili, nominated by the ruling United National Movement. The main opposition force Georgian Dream nominated its leader, billionaire Bidzina Ivanishvili, the influential Christian-Democratic Movement nominates its leader Giorgi Targamadze and the New Right - its leader David Gamkrelidze.

All the candidates will receive an opportunity to participate in the debate on public broadcasting programmes. However, there is no final agreement between the candidates. For example Ivanishvili wants to debate not with Merabivshili, but with Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili.
