The U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Philip Gordon said tensions in Georgia after the parliamentary elections are 'quite natural'.

According to him, the different political orientation of Georgian president and prime minister is a 'positive step'.

"Obviously, there are difficulties at this stage, which are inevitable after tense pre-election campaign," Gordon said.

In his words, the U.S. called on both sides to prevent problems for the rule of law, created by the tension.

"Both sides take the interests of the country to heart, and both sides know that tensions are not in their interests. I call on them to avoid confrontation, political persecution and false accusations," the diplomat said.

Gordon stressed that the international community is closely monitoring these processes.

"The U.S. believes that Georgia should continue the policy of integration into the West and peaceful democratic transition of power has to take place," Gordon said.
