A helicopter crashed late Friday into the roof of a popular pub in the centre of Glasgow, news reports said, dpa reported.

Several people were injured, the BBC reported. A spokesman for the fire brigade, however, could not confirm the report.

The BBC also reported that the helicopter had police insignia. Police in Scotland said on Twitter they had received a number of tweets regarding the incident, but didn't confirm that it was their helicopter.

"Absolutely awful news about a helicopter crashing into the Clutha," Nicola Sturgeon, deputy prime minister of Scotland, wrote in a tweet. "All my thoughts are with everyone involved and the emergency services."

The pub is located just a few minutes by foot from the main shopping street in the centre of Glasgow.

Eyewitness Fraser Gibson, 34, told the BBC the crash interrupted live music inside the pub.

"Part of the room was covered in dust. We didn't know what had happened. We froze for a second; there was panic and then people trying to get out the door," Gibson told the BBC.
