The State Duma has elected former head of the Kremlin administration Sergei Naryshkin as the speaker at the first plenary session on Wednesday, RIA Novosti reported.
This decision was supported by 238 MPs. There is same number of members of United Russia party in the State Duma.
As a result of the voting, Naryshkin is ahead of his rivals - the candidate of the Communist Party Ivan Melnikov, the Liberal Democratic Party - Vladimir Zhirinovsky and "Fair Russia" - Sergey Mironov.
