A crowd of flag-waving Americans gathered outside the White House late Sunday night to cheer the leaked news that al-Qaeda terrorist leader Osama bin Laden had been killed, dpa reported.
The crowd sang a rowdy version of the US national anthem.
US President Barack Obama was to speak shortly to the nation to formally announce bin Laden's death, CNN reported.
The face of anti-US terrorism, who has been wanted for nearly 10 years since the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, was apparently killed in a mansion outside Islamabad by an attack triggered by "actionable US intelligence," CNN reported.
The US Senate had placed a 50-million-dollar price on bin Laden's head. His assassination had been authorized by former president George W Bush.
