The US military has eliminated a top Daesh (IS) leader in Syria, who was second in command in the terrorist organization, Sputnik reported citing local media.

The news of the top Daesh operative's death has been confirmed by a senior US official, Fox News reported.

Daesh is a designated terrorist group outlawed in many countries. The infamous group has seized large areas in Syria and Iraq and declared a caliphate on territories under its control.

The US-led coalition of more than 60 nations has been carrying out airstrikes against Daesh, first in Iraq and later Syria since 2014 - albeit without the approval of the Syrian government or the UN Security Council.
