The cultivation of bananas in greenhouses in Azerbaijan may be quite profitable taking into account the high demand for this fruit in the country, head of the Azerbaijani Fruit and Vegetable Producers and Exporters Association Bashir Guliyev told Trend.
“According to the medium-term business plan, the country intends to start to grow bananas in greenhouses,” he said.
"This fruit is in great demand in any season in Azerbaijan, so great consumer interest is ensured throughout the year,” Guliyev said. “On the other hand, the production of this exotic fruit in Azerbaijan is also beneficial from the point of view of transportation and logistics."
“There are the corresponding modern technologies for the production of bananas in the southern regions of the country,” he said.
"Azerbaijani specialists tried to start to produce bananas in Azerbaijan a couple of years ago, but it was unsuccessful,” he said.
“I think that the use of modern technologies and the competent use of the entire technological process in greenhouses (a corresponding level of humidity, temperature) will ensure efficient production and a rich harvest," Guliyev said.
Presently, Azerbaijan imports bananas from Ecuador and a number of other countries.
