Eleven people were killed and 21 injured when two vehicles collided on a road in southern Egypt on Saturday, a security source said.

A car trying to overtake a truck was in collision with a minibus coming in the other direction on a desert highway in the Minya region, 240 kilometres south of Cairo, DPA reported.

Nine of the passengers as well as the two drivers were killed. The injured were transported to the nearest hospital.

Traffic accidents are common in Egypt because of poor road conditions, speeding and reckless driving. Some 6,000 people die and 30,000 are injured on Egypt's roads each year.
