Azadlig Bloc to Boycott Election Show –Azadlig Bloc’s Co-Chairman

Azerbaijan, Baku / Trend corr. S.Ilhamgizi / AZadlig bloc wants to take part in the upcoming presidential elections 2008, Lala Shovkast, the co-chairman of the bloc, said in interview to journalists on 6 November.

The presidential elections in Azerbaijan will be held on 15 October 2008. Azadlig unites three opposition parties.

The bloc contends that the presidential election 2003 and parliamentary elections 2005 were not democratic.

OSCE, Council of Europe and other international organizations stated that no violations which may affect on the result of the elections were observed during the elections.

The goal of the opposition Azadlig bloc is the elections. However, the bloc would not take part in the election show. "We do not want to be declaration of the election show," Shovkat said.

Shovkat said the Democratic Party of Azerbaijan, Musavat and Azadlig would take part in the upcoming presidential elections if the pre-election democratic situation to be created in Azerbaijan.

Azadlyg bloc unites three opposition parties, Popular Front Party, Liberal Party and Citizen and Development Party.

Shovkat had been the State secretary from 1993 to 1994. In 1996 Shovkat established the Liberal Party of Azerbaijan. Shovkat took part in the presidential elections 2003. Since 2005 the Liberal Party has been represented in the Azadlig bloc. Azadlig is the single bloc which intends to boycott the upcoming presidential elections in Azerbaijan. The ruling New Azerbaijan and ten opposition parties stated about participation in the elections.
