Separation among Parties Weaken Opposition in   Azerbaijan – Party Chairman

Azerbaijan, Baku, 15 March / Trend corr. S.Ilhamgizi / The Vahdat party considers boycott of the upcoming presidential elections as a part of opposition parties and participation of others weaken opposition.

"The separated behavior among opposition parties cause damage to opposition and weaken it," Tahir Karimli, Vahdat party chairman stated to Trend .

The presidential elections will be held in Azerbaijan in autumn 2008.

The opposition Musavat, Democratic, Umid, Great Establishment parties and others stated to participate in the presidential elections with their candidates. Azadlig bloc, which unites three opposition parties, Popular Front, Liberal and Citizen and Development, stated to boycott the upcoming presidential elections if no democratic conditions are created.

Karimli believes that even there will be created democratic atmosphere opposition has no chance to win the elections. "The population do not believe in opposition any more," Karimli said.

" Split within parties is also weakening opposition. Vahdat openly stated that the party would support the candidature of Ilham Aliyev. But there are parties, which are functioning under the opposition name and support the Government secretely," Karimli stated.

Vahdat headed by former MP Karimli had been taken an opposition course against the Government till 2006.
