23 Foreign Citizens Arrested in March for Breach of Azerbaijani Border

Azerbaijan, Baku, 7 April / corr. Trend I. Alizade/ In March 2008, the employees of State Border Service of Azerbaijan arrested 23 foreign citizens while illegal crossing the border.

"Some 37 people were arrested in March as a result of the efforts to protect state borders. Out of aforementioned number 13 are citizens of Azerbaijan, 8 - Georgia, 6 - Iran, 4 - Afghanistan, 3 - Iraq, 1 - Turkey, 1 - Great Britain and 1 of them does not have citizenship, said the press release of the State Border Service on 7 April.

Furthermore, some 36 people have been arrested for breach of boundary regime in territories of frontier troops. 35 of them are Azerbaijani citizens and one is Georgian.

15 people have been arrested while attempting to cross the border with false documents. 5 of them are citizens of Azerbaijan, 4 - Georgia, 3 - Iraq and the remaining are from Iran, Turkey and Great Britain, said the press release.

Four Azerbaijani citizens have been arrested while attempting to cross the border with documents of other people.

5 cases of transportation of 14 kg 635gr of drugs have been vetoed.

About 4 steamers and 8 boats have been arrested in the Caspian Sea.

46 cases of smuggling with a total cost of AZN66,335 have also been prevented.

One submachine gun of AKS-74 brand, one pistol of MSina-Kral-2005 and 6 live cartridges with caliber of 7.62mm were confiscated in March.
