Azerbaijan, Baku, 20 May / Trend corr. E.Babayev / The Azerbaijani opposition leaders have no chance to success in the upcoming presidential elections in the country. "Opposition will collect just 1% or 2 % of votes," Zardusht Alizade, a political scientist, stated to Trend on 20 May.

The presidential elections in Azerbaijan will be held on 15 October 2008.

The Azadlig bloc, which unites three opposition parties -Popular Front party, Citizen and Development party and Liberal party, will boycott the presidential elections. However, the boycott of the forthcoming elections by Azadlig is not supported by other opposition parties. Musavat has nominated the candidature of Isa Gambar, Chairman of the party, for the presidential post, as well as Sardar Jalaloglu from Democratic party, and Mais Gulaliyev from Green party of Azerbaijan. Eldar Namazov, a political scientist, stated that he would participate in the presidential elections as an independent candidate. The candidature of Ilham Aliyev will be nominated from the ruling Yeni Azerbaijan party.

Isa Gambar stated in the meeting with youths in the mid April that the party considers the presidential elections as its last chance and would take every effort to succeed. The candidate who will collect only 20% or 25% of votes must think about his political activity. If the candidate who will collect less votes would not stop his political activity then the members of his party should oust him from this position, Gambar said.

Gambar said confidence that he would collect about 40% of votes during the election process. "If I will collect less than 40% of votes I will not nominate my candidature in next elections," Gambar said.

Alizade said that the current opposition candidates for the presidential post have no chances to succeed. Neither Etibar Mammadov, Leader of Azerbaijani National Independent Party (ANIP), neither Isa Gambar or Sardar Jalaloglu, Leader of Democratic party of Azerbaijan  have chance to succeed in the forthcoming presidential elections. Opposition made a lot of mistakes and therefore the population will not support them," Alizade said.

"Every politician has its chance. Isa Gambar had such chance during the presidential elections in 2003. However, he could not use this chance," Alizade said.

Jalaloglu said to Trend that he did not believe in the opposition support.
