PACE to Form Mission to Watchdog Presidential Elections in Azerbaijan

A.Maharramli / The composition of the Council of Europe Commission to watchdog the presidential elections in Azerbaijan will be formed in the June session of the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly (PACE). Azerbaijan will host the presidential elections in October 2008.

"The composition of the Commission to watchdog the elections will be started forming during the June session," Samad Seyidov, Head of the Azerbaijani delegation to PACE, said to journalists on 23 June.

PACE summer session started its work on 23 June. The agenda of the session was approved in today's meeting of Bureau. The discussions regarding Azerbaijan will be held on 24 June.

Seyidov said that the first data about the presidential elections in Azerbaijan was given in the meeting: "The composition of the watchdog commission will be formed in June session. The issue concerning political prisoners has not been touched upon," Seyidov said, adding that different meetings would be held within the framework of the session.

The Azerbaijani delegation will meet with the PACE Chairman on 23 June. PACE Chairman will pay a visit to the Southern Caucasus region after the summer session.

Furthermore, the agenda also includes the visit of Co-chairs to Armenia and to hold urgent discussions in PACE regarding the situation in Azerbaijan.

The discussions with regard to Armenia will be held on 25 June.
