Azerbaijan’s Opposition National Independence Party Prepares to Elect New Chairman

Azerbaijan, Baku, 9 Dec/ Trend corr J. Babayeva/ Azerbaijan's opposition National Independence Party (ANIP) will elect its new chairman at the early 2009, Ali Orujov, secretary to the ANIP chairman for promotion, said to Trend .

"In January 2009, the Political Council of the party will fix the date of the meeting," Orujov said.

At late Dec of 2007, Chairman of the party Ayaz Rustamov appealed the Political Council as he could not perform his position for health reasons. Rustamov said to Trend in mid-January that he did not resign for health reasons, but because of processes within the party.

Political Council of ANIP accepted Rustamov's resignation in a meeting held at late January.

Fagan Maharramov, chairman of Goranboy regional organization of the party, Aladdin Asgarov, chairman of Narimanov district organization and secretary general of the party Fuad Mukhtarov have been nominated for chairmanship.

Orujov said new candidates can be nominated for the chairmanship prior to the meeting of the party in accordance with the regulations.

NIPA, founded in 1992, is the first officially registered political party in Azerbaijan. Etibar Mammadov was the founder and chairman of the party until 2004. At present, Mammadov is the deputy chairman of the International Democratic Union (IDU).
