The damage caused by an explosion in a 5-story apartment building in Baku at 30 Javadkhan St. on Jan. 16 is being assessed. Vice Prime Minister Abid Sharifov said the damage would be determined in two days.
The government will compensate the damage, he said.
The building's fourth and fifth stories completely collapsed in the explosion.
Five people died - Tahirov Osman Rustam oglu, 38, Akbarov Hafiz Nurulla oglu, 50, Bagirova Fargana Ilyas gizi, 37, Huseynova Nargiz Bahlul gizi, 67, and Murtuzayeva Elnara, 29.
According to preliminary investigations, the explosion occurred due to a gas leak, Emergency Situations Deputy Minister Etibar Mirzayev said.
A suspect in the case has been detained, First Deputy Baku Prosecutor Fazil Hasanov told Trend .
The suspect, Orkhan Aliyev, resides in Apt. No. 60 in the building.
Nasimi Department No. 19 police officers detained Aliyev.
A criminal case has been filed against Aliyev based on Article 124.2 of the Criminal Code on reckless homicide of two or more people and Article 187.3 on damaging property due to carelessness.
Sharifov urged people to be cautious when using domestic gas. He said most explosions are due to disregarding safety regulations.
Sharifov added that the investigation into the explosion at 30 Javadkhan St. determined that an illegal gas line had been installed in the apartment.
