Turkmen, Iranian presidents to discuss national priorities

Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov will review further steps to develop traditional interstate cooperation on regional and international policy with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

The presidents will discuss the legal status of the Caspian Sea, cooperation in the trade and energy sectors and expanding bilateral relations in the humanitarian sphere.

Iran purchases gas from Turkmenistan for its northern provinces.

Turkmenistan has implemented large-scale projects with Iran in the recent past, including the construction of the Dostluk Reservoir, Tedjen-Seraks-Meshed Railway and Korpece-Kurtuki gas pipeline. The annual trade turnover between Turkmenistan and Iran exceeds $2.5 billion.

High-level Turkmen-Iranian meetings were held in summer 2007.

In December 2008, the two countries exchanged instruments to ratify an inter-governmental agreement on mutual aid in criminal cases, and signed a memorandum on counsel, customs and border issues.
