Azerbaijani opposition union agrees to cooperate with referendum group

A union of Azerbaijani opposition parties will send a representative to a referendum initiative group.

"The Union for Democracy Board chairman agreed to cooperate with the Movement for Karabakh and the Republic," the Classic Popular Front Party (CPFP) told Trend .

The referendum campaign will begin on Feb. 18 and end March 16 at midnight. 

Azerbaijan will hold a referendum on March 18 to amend the Constitution.

The Central Election Commission (CEC) registered the New Azerbaijan, City, Progress, Law and Democracy and Civil Society initiative groups. The Prosperous Village, Free Speech, Azerbaijan People's Republic and National Independence groups were not registered.

The Azerbaijani Constitution was adopted in 1995. Amendments and additions were made in 2002.

The party said UFD will be represented in the referendum group by CPFP Deputy Chairman on Organizational Issues Baybala Abil.

The Union for Democracy was founded by the Classic Popular Front Party, Azadlig party and National Democracy Party after the 2005 parliamentary elections. The Great Azerbaijan Party joined the union in early September 2008.  

The Movement for Karabakh and the Republic was launched by the Azerbaijani Front Party, Citizens and Development Party, Liberal Party, Democrat, Umid and Musavat.
