The UNESCO World Heritage List can be extended by including one of the largest sand deserts in the world Karakum, an official Turkmen source said.
The issue has been recently discussed by Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and UNESCO General Director Irina Bokova in Paris, the source said.
UNESCO's list already includes Turkmenistan's ancient settlements Merv, Kunyaurgench and Nisa, residence of Parthian kings.
The Karakum desert covers 350 000 square km and consists of the Zaunguz Karakum desert, the Central Karakum Karakum lowland and Southeast Karakum.
According to travelers, Karakum is the youngest of the great deserts.
