Local government elections in Georgia is an important step in the consolidation of the Georgian democracy U.S. Congressional Committee said in its official letter.

In the letter the U.S. congressmen thank the Georgian Parliamentary Speaker David Bakradze for creating a group working on the Electoral Code and for the efforts to involve non-parliamentary opposition in the commission's work.

"As Georgia's friends and partners we would like to congratulate you by this letter and stress how you have played an important role in holding fair and free elections in the country," said in the letter signed by chairman of the House Democracy Partnership

, Congressman David Price and Congressman David Dreier.

The letter also includes information on parliamentary elections scheduled for 2012 and states that House Democracy Partnership of the Congress is ready to support the Georgian Parliament to continue to improve transparency and efficiency of democratic institutions.

"We hope that the Parliament again will continue to support the participation of opposition parties in the political process, which will further improve the country's election law and democratic institutions", the letter says.
