Georgia is undergoing a modernization of historical importance, and there is no turning back, Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili said during a meeting with the Finance Ministry today.

"Georgia is passing through a stage of historical modernization," he said. "We once had a country without even a basic water supply and sewerage system." He added that regardless of what the populists say, the government will continue to "invest in the development and improvement of real economic growth."

Saakashvili stressed that funds are being invested today in building road and developing infrastructure, noting that water was once supplied on a time schedule in most Georgian cities.

The president also noted that the government will work to complete its infrastructural projects by 2013, which will take the country to a "new economic stage of development."

"This is a historic moment, and I'm very proud," Saakashvili said.
