Azerbaijan, Baku, Sept.30 / Trend, E.Tariverdiyeva /

GUAM Parliamentary Assembly upon Azerbaijan's invitation will take part in observing the elections to the Azerbaijani Parliament, which is scheduled for Nov.7, the GUAM Secretary General Valeri Chechelashvili said.
"I also plan to arrive [in Azerbaijan] in the organization's observers mission," Chechelashvili told Trend over telephone from Kiev.

Besides GUAM, parliamentary elections in Azerbaijan will be observed by the missions of a number of international organizations - the OSCE, CE, EU and CIS. The CIS observation mission will be headed by the organization's Executive Secretary Sergey Lebedev, the CIS Executive Committee told Trend earlier.

Parliamentary elections are scheduled for Nov. 7. Previous legislative elections were held in November 2005. Parliamentary elections in Azerbaijan are held by the majority system in 125 electoral constituencies.

GUAM was established by post-Soviet countries in 1997 during the EU presidential summit in Strasbourg. Uzbekistan joined the organization in 1999 and left it after four years. A decision was made to announce GUAM as an international organization and give it a new name "Organization for Democracy and Economic Development - GUAM" at the first summit of the organization in Kiev in 2006.
