Former Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze is ready to give testimony to the Georgian Parliamentary Interim Commission, which is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of first Georgian President Zviad Gamsakhurdia, he said on Monday in an interview with the Asaval-Dasavali weekly.
The commission concluded its work last week and submitted its report to parliament. The commission ruled out the possibility of Gamsakhurdia's suicide during its investigation and also recommended reopening an investigation into the case.
The commission's conclusion is supported by parliament. Many experts believe that Gamsakhurdia's death was likely "ordered" by Shevardnadze, his political opponent at the time. The death of Gamsakhurdia coincided with the start of a civil war.
"I'm ready again to testify in the case, although I have already testified and said everything. But if they want to hear my testimony again, then let them come to my home. I'm not going to visit parliament," Shevardnadze said. However, he called it "strange" that the commission is headed by Gamsakhurdia's son, MP Konstantin Gamsakhurdia.
