Commenting on the statement of the U.S. Admiral, James Stavridis, NATO Supreme Allied Commander Europe, that the ranks of the Libyan opposition have supporters of al-Qaeda and the Lebanese movement Hezbollah, the analyst of the Egyptian newspaper Al Ahram said that the West controls the situation in Libya and will not allow strengthening the positions of any extremist organizations.

"In any case, the West will not allow strengthening of extremist organizations here," he told Trend over phone from Cairo.

Speaking on Tuesday before the U.S. Senate, James Stavridis said that terrorists of al-Qaeda and Hezbollah movements may be among the rebels who are fighting against the regime of Gaddafi in Libya.
He acknowledged that the coalition examines the leaders of the Libyan opposition and that there are "signals of the potential presence" of international terrorists among them. The commander-in-chief said that the representatives of terrorist organizations do not have much significance in the insurgency.

The leaders of the international coalition said at London conference which completed on March 29 that they are ready to continue the operation in Libya to the bitter end.

The UN Security Council adopted a resolution on March 17 calling for the introduction of a no-fly zone over Libya and approving the possibility of foreign military operations. The operations were launched on March 19.
Libya has seen mass unrest against the Gaddafi regime from Feb. 15. The people are protesting Gaddafi, who has ruled the country for 40 years. The number of the dead has hit thousands of people.

He said that in case of Gaddafi's resignation, Western countries will control the situation in Libya. No group or organization will be able to come to power or gain a foothold in the country without their consent.
